Why Area Code Search USA

Built to actually help, not just list

Live local time

Every code page shows a real clock ticking in that region’s time zone — not a static label — so you know if it’s a decent hour to call.

Interactive maps

Pan and zoom real OpenStreetMap coverage for each area code, with a static fallback so pages stay fast on any connection.

Honest scam guidance

Straight answers on spoofed and spam calls for each code — the red flags to watch, and why a “local” number proves nothing.

Background

How North American area codes work

A North American phone number follows the pattern (NPA) NXX-XXXX. The first three digits — the NPA, or “number plan area” — are what everyone calls the area code, and they anchor a number to a geographic region across the US, Canada and much of the Caribbean.

The first codes were assigned in 1947. As phones, faxes, modems and mobiles multiplied, regions ran short of numbers. Early on, a crowded region was “split” into a new code; today new demand is almost always met with an overlay — a second code laid over the same map, which is why so many places now require ten-digit dialing.

Toll-free codes (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888) aren’t tied to any city, and caller ID can be faked, so a familiar-looking area code never proves where a call truly came from. Each code page here spells out what to trust.
